An Amtrak  vacation is something you might consider for your next vacation, particularly if that is something you’ve never tried before. Many North American destination cities are easily accessible by train. Getting there can be half the fun on some of the more scenic routes.

One of the most popular vacation destinations is the city of San Diego in Southern California.  The train runs right into the middle of town, with easy local public transportation available to take you to your choice of many San Diego hotels, and most of the attractions.  San Diego is distributed across a smaller geographical area than other parts of southern California, notably Orange County and Los Angeles. You can even get around to a lot of the San Diego destinations by walking if you enjoy that.

Maybe it’s your idea to spend one or more of your vacation days at a theme park that offers thrill rides.  I’m talking about Knott’s Berry Farm and Six Flags Magic Mountain (aka Magic Mountain to the locals). As a means to compete more effectively with the Disneyland Resort, one Southern California vacation  writer notes that these two theme parks have invested a tremendous amount of cash in developing their thrill rides over the years.

Magic Mountain is crazy with wild coasters; the place is lousy with thrill rides. If you are visiting with folks who don’t care as much about thrill rides, you’ll still find plenty to do; check out the Southern California Vacation Guru for useful ideas.

The second Southern California theme park with a strong emphasis on roller coasters is Knott’s Berry Farm, although it too offers many activities such as Ghost Town. We have talked to employees who can confirm that several of the roller coasters at Knott’s will push you to the limit of comfort.

The first place we think of is Disneyland, the hangout for Mickey, Donald and all their buddies. Your trip to Disneyland  will be better if you do a little research at one of several great websites; the same is true for other theme parks and information on Magic Mountain hotels can also be found online. Disney has no-doubt done the most effective job of bringing imaginary characters to life, much to the delight of us all.

Hit Universal Studios Hollywood and you can find Spiderman, Betty Boop, the Flintstones, Woody Woodpecker and a squadron of other beloved Universal characters that have been at the heart of many television shows and famous movies. The SoCal Vacation Guru has a lot of information to help you visit your favorite Universal Studios characters, including important insight about hotels near Universal Studios Hollywood.

Be sure to make reservations at a well-located hotel, regardless of how you plan to spend your vacation time.  If you are not a little bit careful, a major part of your vacation will be spent on the freeway driving to your destinations.  That would be valuable time to waste since you only have so long for your vacation.
